The Haunted News Channel

I was living in Northern British Columbia at the time, sharing a two bedroom apartment with another person. It was about 3am, and my roommate was out of town. I was watching the news, and started to drift off to sleep. Then I heard the names of my former neighbors mentioned. The announcer said that the whole family had been killed in a head-on crash with a truck.
I sat up, shocked, and listened for more information. That was all, and the announcer went on to other things. Not too long after, my roommate showed up and some things were said that drove this to the back of my mind.
I was not personal friends with the people who had died, but had talked with them, and lived in the same building as them. So it wasn't like someone I was really close to had died. I did listen for the story to come on again, but strangely, it never came on more than once, and it got pushed aside.
We had to move about three months later, as work was scarce, and the rent became too much to pay. We rented an old house together with another person. Then, about one week and 3 months later, it happened again, at 3am .
This time one of my roommates was at home with me. However, something had changed. The announcer said it had happened that week! I bought a newspaper, and found their obituaries, and the news item about the crash.
I did not know it was an event that was going to happen, when I first heard it. How could I have known?
Years passed. I had a child. Life went on, much the same as usual. Then one day, last week, I was up at 3am, listening to the news, sort of drifting between sleep and awareness. The announcer finished talking about the earthquakes in the Samoa + Indonesia areas. Then he went on to talk about an earthquake just on the American side of the Great Lakes, and a diagram came on that showed the epicenter. It was on land, but it shook the land under two of the great lakes. It was a big one, maybe 6. something. Then he went on to say there was one near a place called Whistler Ridge? Whistler Mountain? - near Vancouver, BC, on the other side of the country from that earthquake. It was I think, North of the Vancouver area, and I didn't hear that part well, for some reason.
However, the next thing he said was that it had happened at the same time as the events in the Indonesia/Samoa area. However, we would most certainly have felt it here in Vancouver, as it was big enough to be newsworthy. I roused fully awake, and sat up. In doing so, I had leaned on the remote, switching the channels. I tried and tried, but could find absolutely nothing on the news but items about the horrible damage done by the earthquakes down there.
Then it occurred to me that I might have heard this particular announcer before. So is this yet to come?
