Strangeness

by Serena
(Canada)

Alright well, before I start anything I just thought I'd let you guys know to not expect this to be scary. I don't really have a definite belief if whether or not ghosts exist but I do think some of these minor strange things that have happened in my life are quite odd. And yes, this is true otherwise I wouldn't be posting something like this if it didn't happen.

Ok, well as far back as I can remember (I was only probably 7 or 8) my parents had gone through a divorce and I lived with my mother for part of my life and just visited my father every other weekend. Well, during those weekends sometimes I would go up to my grandparent's (from my fathers side of the family) up to their house and spend the night. Now mind you, their house is pretty average looking and nice so I easily felt comfortable there. But...that's when things started.

Now when you walk into the house, to get to the bedrooms upstairs you have to go up a set of stairs then turn a corner and go up a short flight. I remember instantly getting uneasy as I went up them, like the feeling you get when someone's behind you and naturally I always ran up them. Of course nothing out of the ordinary happened during the day except for that.

At night was a different story. I usually slept in the bed out in the hallway. One night I recall waking up for some reason and I couldn't go back to sleep and I had no clue as to what made me get up because normally I'm a heavy sleeper. Then as I sat in the darkness for what seemed like a couple of minutes I happened to hear footsteps coming up the stairs. Now, when someone walks on the stairs you can tell because on each step is a piece of thin layer of rubber (don't ask how, it's just always been on them) and so the noise is pretty distinct.

So there I lay, listening to the footsteps and not feeling worried cause I thought it was grandma since she always wears slippers and is up half the night. However the bed I slept in was close to my grandparent's room and their door was wide open. So I got up and went to the stairs hoping to see grandma come up.

But the footsteps stopped...and no one was there.

I was very creeped out by this and looked into my grandparent's bedroom. They were both fast asleep. Needless to say, I dived under the covers and stayed like that for the rest of the night. In the morning I told my grandma what happened but of course you know how adults are and naturally they thought I was just dreaming.

The same thing continued to happen for a while almost every time I stayed up at their place until I decided to sleep in the bedroom down at the other end of the hall past the staircase. But that didn't seem to help. Whenever I was by myself in the room I still got that feeling like something was behind me sometimes and I'd look but nothing was there.

Another strange thing that happened too when I started to sleep in that room is on some occasions I'd be just laying there trying to get to sleep when I would suddenly feel the blankets go tight around my feet as though the they were being tucked in from the bottom of the bed or like some type of weight set down. One time my dog (her name was Milly) was lying at the foot of the bed and just suddenly started barking in the middle of the night, which woke me up. When I sat up to see what was going on, the bedroom door was wide open and the hallway was pitch-black...but I didn't see anything there. What was strange was that I had tightly shut the door before I had gone to bed. Anyways, Milly just kept barking and looking straight into the hallway like someone was there! I did happen to catch some sort of shadow but I didn't dwell on it when I buried myself under the covers and wished it were all a dream. I managed to fall asleep somehow after that, probably because I was so scared and exhausted from being woken up in the middle of the morning.

However that strange encounter never did happen again but the thing with the blankets would happen once and awhile. It seemed to slowly stop as I grew up. But every now and then sometimes the rooms I walk in will be normal temp but then suddenly cold even though the heat is on.

Who knows...maybe it might have been some spirit or another. One can't really be sure.

Writers from Clive Barker to Bruce Sterling and Roger Zelazny have praised John Shirley’s searing, apocalyptic visions of postmodern hell on earth. Now this perversely brilliant author, one of the seminal representatives on the cyberpunk movement, unleashes his newest masterpiece.
